Investigation protocol
How to run a paranormal investigation you can still respect in the morning.
The product is the session, not a single beep. One room. A named case. Sensors and tape on one clock. A control when you use a spirit box. A report that is allowed to say nothing happened.
Before you open the app
Get permission. Stay off other people’s property. Tell anyone in the house you are recording. Spirit Boxly is entertainment and experimental use — it is not a reason to trespass or to scare someone who did not ask.
Write the mundane map first: pets, HVAC, street, breaker panel, a fridge that cycles. Those notes belong in the case because they will explain half the night.
The session
-
Name the case
Location, case name, team, and a one-line intent. “First walkthrough of the back bedroom” is enough.
-
Baseline the field
Phone still. Use the magnetometer. Lock a room baseline. If you must walk, treat field radar as a map of your movement, not a ghost.
-
Roll tape
Start investigation audio. Announce yourself. Follow the EVP rules: original file stays intact, headphones if a sweep will play.
-
Question window
One question. Wait. Spirit Boxly gives you ten seconds and a seed for the spirit box run. Blind review if you have a second person — see Estes.
-
Control run
Same settings, no questions. If the log looks identical, write that down.
-
Finish the report
Duration, peak EMF, markers, spirit box responses, highest-activity window. Keep it on the device. The free plan saves one investigation.
What “good” looks like
A good report is boring and complete. Sources are labeled: measured, heard, or generated. You can see whether a spike happened while you picked the phone up. You can replay the tape around a mark without the app having “enhanced” it.
iPhone sensors measure magnetic fields, motion, and sound. They cannot scientifically confirm paranormal activity. Review results critically. Account for electronics, movement, and environmental noise.
Investigation FAQ
How do you investigate a house with a phone?
One room at a time, baseline first, record audio, then add a spirit box or questions. Review the timeline later. Do not treat a walking EMF plot as evidence.
What belongs in the case report?
Who, where, how long, peak EMF, audio marks, spirit box log, control comparison, and a highest-activity window. Spirit Boxly assembles that when you finish.
