EVP recorder

How to record EVP on iPhone without wrecking the tape.

EVP is a review job. You record a quiet room, mark the moments that felt odd, then listen again when nobody is performing. The iPhone microphone is good enough for that — if you do not let the spirit box write on the same file.

What EVP is (and is not)

Electronic voice phenomena are speech-like sounds found on a recording that the team did not clock live. Classically this is a standalone recorder in a still room. It is not a live radio sweep — that is a spirit box — and it is not proof of a haunting. It is a way to slow down a night and argue about a timestamp.

Phone Voice Memos can capture a room. They cannot mark EMF, motion, or a generated fragment on the same timeline. That is why investigators look for an EVP recorder app that keeps the original audio intact.

Setup that actually changes the recording

  • Still the phone. Pockets rustle. A table is better than a hand.
  • Say the obvious out loud. “Car passing,” “heater,” “that was me.” Future-you will thank present-you.
  • Headphones on the box. If a sweep is playing from the speaker, the microphone will eat it. That is not an EVP. That is bleed.
  • One room. Walk-and-talk recordings are motion theater. Sit for a few minutes.

Markers without rewriting the file

The original should stay the original. Spirit Boxly lets you drop markers for sound, EMF, and notes. Those markers point at a time. They do not mix generated audio into the microphone file. When you replay, you hear the room, then you decide whether a mark was a chair or something you still cannot explain.

Full investigations record session audio alongside the spirit box log. Standalone EVP is available for a shorter capture. Free sessions last up to three minutes, with one saved investigation. Recordings stay on the device unless you share them.

How to review without hearing voices in everything

  1. Listen once for the room

No headphones-in-the-dark theatrics. Just: what is actually on the tape?

  2. Jump to marks

Play a few seconds before and after. If you need extreme gain and a story, it is probably noise.

  3. Compare the spirit box log

If a “voice” matches a generated fragment time, label it as possible bleed or coincidence. See the Estes notes.

  4. Write the boring line

The report is allowed to say “nothing.” That is a successful session.

EVP FAQ

What is EVP?

Speech-like sound found on a recording during review. It is a method of looking, not a confirmed channel.

Can I record EVP while the spirit box is running?

Yes. Use headphones so the sweep is less likely to hit the mic. Spirit Boxly keeps generated events separate from the microphone file.

Does the app upload my recordings?

No. They stay on the device unless you share them yourself.
